Insights from the 1st collaborative session with experts on waste

AN OVERVIEW

A) FORMAL COLLABORATION

ZERO WASTE ASSOCIATION:
P. Parthasarthy informed us that fundings are available for associations in the central govt. He also informed us about the ‘zero waste society’, an association started by a group of professors at Indian institute of science. He suggested that all players in the room should be a part of this association or form a new association. Dear Parthasarthy, what are the formalities for starting or joining an association? Do we need to fill any formal forms? What are the formalities? How do we work towards starting an association or becoming a part of the zero waste association Before the next session, we hope to do all that is necessary to form or join an association.

B) IDENTIFYING THRUST AREAS

USING SPACES EFFECTIVELY:
A Lot of spaces in co-operate companies are used for landscaping in order to make a place look beautiful. A lot of money is also spent on landscaping and maintenance. Instead, coupled with landscaping, could we start (organic) farming, whereby food for the employees of that particular company can be generated at source. This would save a lot of energy (transportation…) and this could be a beginning towards working at making the organization self sustained on a long-term basis.

Introducing the concept of
INDIVIDUAL COMPOSTING IN PALM MEADOWS
and other such living spaces:

Currently, a lot of energy is being spent in order to manage waste in Palm Meadow as all the organic waste is collected and transported to Banaswadi (Waste management and solutions) by Helin, where large scale composting happens. Instead, if all this organic waste can be composted at source (inside the compound of these houses), where the manure generated as a result of composting can be used for their own gardens, saving a lot of energy.

QUICK COMPOSTERS FOR THE INDIAN CONTEXT:
In India, there are NO products that assist quick composting at a household level, for Indian homes. Most of the composters abroad have been designed for that specific context and are very expensive. This insight has led Daily Dump to expand its product range from terracotta composters (which takes 3 – 6 months to harvest compost from organic waste) to other composters that are much quicker, more convenient (very little interaction with the composter, spending very little time maintaining the composting matter/composter) and cost efficient for each house or apartment.

CRUSHING MACHINES THAT ARE HIGH POWERED YET COST EFFICIENT:
Vilma brought up the issue of the need for crushing large organic waste before putting it into a large composter. Ofcourse, composting happens faster if the particle size is reduced. But presently, there are no products in India that assist such crushing. Products from abroad are very expensive. Can we together, using our knowledge and resources, design a high-powered yet cost efficient crushers for the Indian context? I feel that very little attention is being given to such areas where there is a need for a product (to make composting more efficient).

MAKING COMPOSTING SUSTAINABLE:
Narendra Babu is working on creating and distributing large-scale composters for huge companies, institutions, organizations and other bodies that produce a lot of waste. Vennar Organic fertilizers Pvt Ltd. manufactures rich bio fertilizers. If one can be given an assurance that the compost one creates would be bought, then it would become a more sustainable model to compost.

COMPOSTER ENHANCING FERTILIZERS FOR INDIAN WEATHER CONDITIONS:
The Bokashi Bran for India- The Japanese have developed the Bokashi bran which contains the bacteria, fungi and yeasts necessary to start and quicken the whole composting process. This bran just needs to be sprinkled over the kitchen waste to start and quicken composting
Can we create a similar bran for the Indian weather that would make composing a lot faster. We also have the resource and the knowledge to create such a bran for the India context.

C) INFORMAL SUPPORT FROM EACH OTHER

THERMOCOL WASTE FOR COMPOSTERS
Offering other people our support like the thermocol waste where e-parisara is extending their support to Daily Dump
By coming together, we got an insight of the quantity of e-waste that is being generated everyday. Tons of thermocol waste, generated by cooperate companies like Infosys and Wipro can be used to provide insulation for the composters Daily Dump is developing for the market. This is what we (Daily Dump) is working towards – using waste from one area as resource (food) for another. This is a Cradle-to-Cradle design approach. We also plan to visit e-parisara to see what other waste we could use.

SAAHAS – DAILY DUMP

www.wastematters.blogspot.com is a blog created for us to interact. All the insights and values gained from the collaborative sessions would be updated on this blog. This is an online forum for us to interact between meetings. We plan to have the next collaborative session once we visit your organizations. Do post in your suggestions.

A BUSINESS PLATFORM:
We are also looking at the possibility of Advertizing and informing people of all the different products/services/ solutions each of our companies/organizations offer through this blog which could later give rise to a website.
This could be under the broad picture of Waste management/services and solutions in Bangalore . So therefore if someone is looking for a solution in any one of our areas, they could gain access through this blog. Its like a database.
